Munich, Germany. I'd always wanted to see Soko onces live for - I don't know - five years. On 1st April, the dream came true. Although, it nearly crashed, because I didn't buy a ticket in the pre-sale period. But happily just when I gave up, someone offered me a ticket. Thank you again, to this magnificent person, wherever you be now. Cause, this was the most hilarious terrific funniest and also - when she played her first few depressiv songs - saddiest concert I've ever attended.
But let's start from the beginning. First of all, the evening starts with two openers. The first one was a surprise. Cause, Soko herself announced her brother Max who played four gorgeous indie folk songs on guitar - in part supported by his sister. Perhaps he was a little bit shy. I don't know. The vocals could have been more louder and clearer. But the arrangements (piano, drums, violin, background singers) fitted pretty good. Especially, when Gillian Maguire accompanies on the violin.
Some words to audience. In my opinion, it was a difficult one to play in front of. Most of the crowd didn't stop talking when the first opener played. And, also, sadly, when the second one started to try to give his best. Even, when he tried to ask for more silence. In this case, shame on Munich attendants. I can't understand you.
Latter, the New Yorker boy Luke Rathborne, played really great. He has a really good voice and nice skills on guitar and keyboard. You can convince yourself below. There I have some samples for you.
Please, also, check out the rest on bandcamp.com and support him by buying his album "After Dark".
But now, finally, some last words to the appearance of Soko. First of all, the whole audience stopped speaking, when she suddenly shows up on stage with enchanting string/bass/keyboard-player Gillian Maguire, drums/guitar-player Luke Rathborne, and, also guitar/bass/keyboard-player Max. And she started with some sad tracks and everybody just listened and got bewitched by her lyrics and cute voice. Later, she started to tell some really funny stories. Like what's the track "Why Don't You Eat Me Now You Can" about. She was saying it's not about sex. But it is about meat which she saw it in the record studio and she wanted to eat, because she were that much hungry. Although, she is a vegan. Anyway, there were also some other hilarious things that happened. We had a bunch of zombies on the gallery, some dancing aliens in front of the stage, dance competition, two girls who had or will have birthday on the stage, and, last but not least, Soko used the audience as background singers and instruments.
In conclusion, it was a wonderful evening we all had together. Thank you for it, Soko, Max, Gillian, Luke! Hope see you soon!
Really last words! There is an album out. It's called "I Thought I Was An Alien
". You can stream it below and also buy it on the top. You should buy it!
